On coming home from being hospitalized for a nervous breakdown after her beloved father's alleged suicide, Christy Moreland finds her marriage deteriorating, with her husband Joel and small son under the influence of her ruthless, domineering mother-in-law, Theo. When Theo reopens Spindrift, the mansion that was the scene of the suicide, Christy becomes the victim of incidents designed to drive her from Spindrift or into insanity.
